Flagellation of Christ

We start the section with one of the most outstanding works in the collection, the Flagellation of Christ by Joaquim Juncosa which is part of the acquisitions of the Col·lecció Nacional of the Generalitat of Catalunya for the Museu del Barroc.

Joaquim Juncosa i Donadeu (Cornudella, 1631- Escaladei, 1708), is considered one of the most famous painters of the second half of the 17th century in Catalonia. Unfortunately, both the news and the works of this author are scarce and few studies have been carried out that allow us to delve deeper into the artist’s life and work.

Joaquim, who came from a family of painters, was a Carthusian monk at the Carthusian Monastery of Escaladei and spent seven years in Rome where it is believed that he learned the techniques of the trade from Italian masters. His condition as a monk favored his mobility and the fact that he could make contact with other artistic schools. Beyond Rome, Joaquim Juncosa also spent a season in Mallorca, where he painted an outstanding ensemble for the Charterhouse of Jesus of Nazareth in Valldemossa.

Unfortunately, as has happened with other Baroque artists in our country, much of his work was devastated by the various waves of destruction, confiscation or looting due to the war conflicts of the time. As Francesc Miralpeix points out, even today the life and work of Joaquim Juncosa is full of shadows and inaccurate attributions. However, the previously mentioned Majorcan set dedicated to the cycle of the mysteries of the Rose is preserved, dated and documented.

According to Miralpeix, this cycle is one of the best productions of Baroque painting in Mallorca, and allows you to observe the power and originality of Juncosa’s creative proposal. In fact, the painting of the Flagellation of the artist in Valldemossa is evidenced according to Miralpeix as the definitive proof to support the paternity of the work of the Museu del Barroc through a composition, style, color and expressive force of almost identical characters.

The Flagellation of Juncosa that we can see in the Museu del Barroc shows us some of the essential characteristics of Baroque painting. In general terms it is a work of intense colors that move between the range of toasts with energetic brushwork and variety in the disposition of the characters. He plays with light contrasts and with great dynamism and theatricality in the positions and movements of the bodies and figures. The treatment of light invites us to focus our attention on the act of flagellation, leaving in the penumbra the characters that are not directly involved in the action. Also noteworthy is the anatomical treatment of the bodies as well as the dynamism they present, especially the minions who are flogging Christ, who, despite the crudeness of the scene, has a serene face with no sign of suffering.

Thanks to this transfer by the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Museu del Barroc makes available to the public one of the few preserved works by Joaquim Juncosa and contributes to valuing the figure and work of this outstanding painter of the second half of the 17th century.
