“The lecture La Música Religiosa a Catalunya a l’època del Barroc. La figura de Francesc Valls (ca. 1671–1747) is part of the series La Música a la Catalunya del Barroc (1600–1773), a series of four lectures about music in Catalonia within the cultural context of the period, by the musicologist and essayist Oriol Pérez i Treviño.”
With this third lecture, Oriol Pérez i Treviño will discuss religious music in Catalonia during the Baroque era, which became the main musical genre of the time. In the Catalan context, it was in this field that we find important and prominent figures in both instrumental music—especially for organ—and vocal music. The lecture will explore composers such as Joan Baptista Comes, Joan Cererols from Martorell, and Francesc Valls from Barcelona, who composed a significant body of work that has led him to be considered the Catalan equivalent of Johann Sebastian Bach.
Also in this session, we will discover that it was during the Baroque era when, in churches, some vocal musical forms began to be sung in languages other than Latin. This led to the birth of the carol and oratorio genres.
The lecture will be accompanied by selected musical pieces.
